The master data management market continues to develop across industries and domains. SAP accommodates this trend with its comprehensive, all-encompassing approach to tackle the manifold industry and domain specific master data management challenges that can occur across process chains and organizational units within an enterprise:
SAP provides master data management scenarios for analytical and operational use cases, while simultaneously addressing very specific vertical or horizontal master data-related business pain points with self-contained, directly applicable solutions. In this context, SAP's solutions for Master Data Management feature ready-to-run, central MDM on top of the SAP Business Suite (embedded MDM) while also covering application-agnostic contexts supporting all domains and MDM use cases in the enterprise (enterprise MDM).
Build Your MDM Roadmap According to Your Business Needs and Organizational Set-up
Accordingly, an MDM strategy in an enterprise can comprise several usage patterns at different process-maturity levels:
- Ensure data readiness at local scale (that is, in a single system)
- Integrate and cleanse data at local scale
- Consolidate and harmonize data at global scale (that is, across the entire system landscape, regardless of geographic location of systems)
- Manage data centrally at global scale
The adoption of these usage patterns is not necessarily incremental. An enterprise may pursue a mixed MDM strategy according to specific data domains and organizational areas. This means, for example, that local data readiness may be appropriate for a specific data domain and area within the organization while central master data management and data governance principles at global scale may be relevant for another data domain.
In order to meet the manifold customer needs in this diverse context, SAP has extended its MDM solution portfolio in two dimensions, with continued investments in:
- Embedded MDM (in-depth MDM usage)
Ready-to-run master data governance for specific SAP master data domains, tailored for central data maintenance on top of the SAP Business Suite. Embedded MDM comprises of SAP Master Data Governance applications. -
Enterprise MDM (in-breadth MDM usage)
Enterprise MDM incorporates and complements embedded MDM by extending the overall MDM footprint from SAP Business Suite to full enterprise usages. Enterprise MDM additionally features an application-agnostic, multi-domain infrastructure supporting all domains and use cases in the enterprise. Typically, enterprise MDM comprises of SAP Master Data Governance and SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management, featuring ready-to-run or prepackaged solutions based on a technology foundation for data quality, Workflow , UI etc.
Preconfigured business packages and solutions address specific horizontal or industry-specific MDM needs. For example, in this context the domain-specific SAP Master Data Governance applications help companies ensure the quality of data at the point of creation in SAP ERP, while the global data synchronization (GDS) option to SAP NetWeaver MDM helps companies standardize and synchronize supply chain data with trading partners.
