Recently, lots of people ask me whether SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) is only about financial master data objects, like chart of accounts. Is SAP done with MDG and the scope provided with ERP Enhancement Package 4?
One answer to this question is that there are of course many more master data objects in the financial domain that require a governed create and change process. So why shouldn’t we extend the scope of MDG for financial data “vertically” to cover more objects? At the heart, MDG has been built to cover many of those as well.
Secondly, we designed MDG to serve as the foundation for several master data governance applications, spanning several domains. What about the domains that have a big demand for governed data maintenance, like supplier data and material data? Can the solution also expand in this “horizontal” dimension? Again, MDG is capable of supporting more master data applications than it does today as well.
And third, MDG together with the proven and combined power of the SAP NetWeaver application server technologies can serve as a platform for self-defined, custom objects.
To sum it up, with Enhancement Package 4 and its basic support for the financial domain the story just began. For legal reasons I must explicitly state that you must not base any buying decisions on these forward looking statements. At the same time I recommend that you stay tuned for news about SAP Master Data Governance and SAP’s overall MDM portfolio. ERP Enhancement Package 5 is just around the corner …
